Part-Time Library Assistant

Job Title: Library Assistant
Location: Lena Public Library, Lena, Wisconsin
Job Type: Part-time
Job Summary: We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Library Assistant to join our team at the Lena Public Library. The ideal candidate will be passionate about community engagement and outreach, while also being adept at handling the day-to-day operations of the library. This role requires excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to providing exceptional service to our patrons.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement and Outreach:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programs and events to engage the community and promote library services.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, schools, and community groups to build partnerships and expand outreach efforts.
  • Conduct presentations and workshops to raise awareness about library resources and services.
Library Operations:
  • Assist patrons with locating materials, using library resources, and answering reference questions.
  • Perform circulation duties, including checking in and out materials, managing holds, and processing new items.
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of library spaces, including shelving books and managing displays.
  • Assist with cataloging and processing new materials as needed.
​Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with other library staff to ensure smooth daily operations and provide excellent customer service.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of library programs and events.
  • Provide support for special projects and initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in a library preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with computers and digital tools, including social media platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I get a library card?

Library cards are free to Wisconsin residents. Identification and proof of residence are required for adults when the card application is completed. Minors need a parent’s or guardian’s signature on their application. There is no minimum age requirement to obtain a library card. Please bring your driver’s license and additional proof of residence if your license has an old address.

Should I notify you if I change my address?

Yes. Let us know whenever you change any information on your library card application.

May I use my card at other public libraries?

Yes. You may use your card at the public libraries in these counties: Outagamie, Waupaca, Shawano, Door, Florence, Oneida, Marinette, Kewaunee, Menominee, Oconto, and the Oneida Reservation.

Do I need my library card when I come to the library?

Yes. It is important to have your card to maintain your account accuracy and privacy.

How long may I keep library materials?

  • All videos (adult, children, DVDs) and WIFI Hotspots  – 1 week
  • Books with a short loan –  2 weeks
  • Magazines – 2 weeks
  • Books and audiobooks 4 weeks

How many items may I check out?

The total number of library items that you may have on your account at one time is 75. You may check out 10 movies and 3 video games at any one time.

How will I know when my materials are due?

  • When you check out materials, you will be given a slip listing what you have checked out and when those items are due back at the library.
  • To receive notifications via email, a user has to fill out the Digital Notification Email field in their InfoSoup Account information under Email Address at https://infosoup.bibliocommons.com/account/email (login required).
  • You can also refer to text message notifications (Shoutbomb) signup at InfoSoup.info/Shoutbomb.

May I renew library items?

Most items may be renewed by using the My Account feature of the Infosoup online catalog. Unless there is a waiting list, books, DVDS and other materials may be renewed 2 times. Items may also be renewed via Shoutbomb, please sign up this service here.

How will I know if I have fines or overdue items?

When you check out materials, you will be given a slip listing what you have checked out and when those items are due back at the library. If your library account includes your email address, you will receive a courtesy notice one day before your items are due. You can also check your library account on InfoSoup. Please ask at the library about being notified by text message.

How do I get my notices by email?

To receive email notices from Lena Public Library by email, tell us your email address. We will then send you reserve notices when an item you reserved is available for checkout, an overdue notices when an item is past due and a courtesy notice one day before your items are due.

May I return materials to another library?

Yes, your materials may be returned to the public libraries in these counties: Outagamie, Waupaca, Shawano, Door, Florence, Marinette, Kewaunee, Menominee, Oconto, and the Oneida Reservation. You can wait until the day they are due, since they will be checked in that same day at those libraries.

How can I support the library?

The best way to support the library is by checking out materials! Part of our funding is based on how many people use the library and the number of the items they check- out. So get reading and watching!
  • Monetary donations are always appreciated and you can dictate what part of the collection you would like your money to go towards. Materials bought with donations can also be labeled in memory of or in honor of someone or a group.
  • Use our Amazon Wishlist to donate items and they will be shipped directly to us to use during our programs and daily activities.

How can I place a hold?

Visit our online catalog at infosoup.info and find the item you wish to reserve. Then go to the top of the page and click the button labeled “Place Hold” and follow the prompts. Be sure to choose Lena as your Pickup Location. If you need additional assistance, please call or stop in at the library.

The mission of the Friends of Lena Public Library support the library through fundraising, volunteerism and collaboration for the benefit of the community.

The Friends of the Lena Public Library are individuals and businesses that share a common goal: to advocate for our library. Friends volunteer their time, talent and energies to promote and support our community library by:
  • Helping our library remain a valuable community resource and community center. 
  • Encouraging and supporting giving to our library. 
  • Bringing quality programs for children, teens and adults to our community. 
  • Keeping learning and literacy alive for ALL AGES. 
  • Promoting educational and cultural events.

History

Lena Public Library serves residents of the Village and Town of Lena, WI and the Town of Spruce, WI. The Library is a joint Library, as of January 1, 2022, being owned by the Village of Lena, the Town of Lena and the Town of Spruce with additional funding from Oconto County.

Lena Library is part of the Nicolet Federated Library System. This allows patrons to have access to collections in Outagamie, Waupaca, Shawano, Door, Florence, Oneida, Marinette, Kewaunee, Menominee, Oconto, and the Oneida Reservation. Patrons may borrow items from these libraries and return items to any member library without any fees.

Here is a brief history timeline of our Library:
  • Lena Public Library has a history that dates back to 1929. Librarians were paid $2 a week, the library was open for one day a week, and it was located in Pies Drug Store. The last payment shown to these librarians was in 1950.
  • In 1971, The Lena Lions were formed. And in 1973, Jackie and Ken Linzmeyer brought the idea of a library as something the Lions could organize to help the community
  • Books were obtained from Oconto and kept on shelves in the Village Hall.
  • In 1976, the library was moved to a small room in the McGuire building.
  • In 1984, the library moved back to the Village Hall.
  • On April 10, 1985, our little library officially became a legal library
  • In 1994, Library board members started looking into expansion
  • New/Current Building Built in December 2006

Internet Policy

​Use of electronic information and communication is a rapidly developing area of public and private activity. The Lena Public Library recognizes these developments as a new challenge as well as an opportunity for the Lena community. The Lena Public Library believes that these challenges and opportunities are best addressed by adherence to the fundamental principles of traditional library use and the principles of a free society. The Lena Library may impose restrictions such as time limits on the use of the Internet computers.

Acceptable Use of the Internet

  • Using resources for educational, informational, and recreational use only; and NOT for unauthorized, illegal or unethical purposes.
  • Respecting the privacy of others by not misrepresenting oneself as another user; by not attempting to modify or gain access to files, passwords, or data belonging to others.
  • Not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, or damaging/altering software components of any network or database.
  • Respecting the privacy of others using public access workstations at the Lena Library and not interfering with their use.
  • Not sending, receiving, or displaying text or graphics that may reasonably be construed as obscene.
  • Not sending, receiving, or displaying graphics that ay reasonably be construed as harmful to minors, as defined by Federal and State statute.
  • Making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data. The Lena Library disclaims any liability or responsibility resulting from such use.

Children’s Use of the Internet

The Lena Library upholds and affirms the rights and responsibilities of parents to determine and monitor their children’s use of all library materials and resources, including the Internet. Library staff assumes that unattended minors in the Library have parental permission to use library resources, including the internet. A parent or guardian may request that his or her minor child be denied the use of the Lena Library’s Internet computers. Once the restriction is negotiated with the Lena Library Director, submitted in writing, the Lena Library will provide its best efforts to enforce the restriction requested. however, the Library cannot guarantee absolute compliance with the restriction by the child. The parent or guardian remains responsible for monitoring use of the Internet and other electronic resources at the Library.

In the event of inappropriate use of the Lena Library’s Internet access by a minor, the child’s parent or guardian will be notified by the Lena Library. Unacceptable use of the Lena Library’s Internet access will result in denial of computer privileges after the second offense.

Consequences for Unacceptable Use

Library staff observing unacceptable behavior shall take appropriate action. Unacceptable use of the Lena Library’s Internet access will result in discipline ranging from a verbal warning to denial of computer privileges. At the discretion of the Lena Library Director, incidents may reported to the OWLS and NICOLET libraries in which each individual library may enforce their own consequences. When a patron is banned from using the computers from any OWLS or NICOLET library group, the Lena Library will also uphold this ban. When a patron is banned from using the Lena Library computers or a time longer than one week, a written report of the explanation will be forwarded (or in the case of a minor child, forwarded to his or her parent or guardian). When deemed appropriate by the Lena Library Director and Lena Library Board, reports will be forwarded to the Lena Police Department or other appropriate law enforcement agency.
